Getting the youth Hooked!

Not all fishing is catching. However, we learned enough to merit writing a report from this weekend during a high school bass fishing tournament on Hardy Dam. The bass on this body of water are still deep and scattered. The water temp was 49 deg and the air was 32 deg at take off. The entire tournament consisted of 31 high school teams and the winning weight rounded to nearly 11 lbs. It’s interesting to note that only one big female was caught that day, 4.7 lbs.

What we learned is that most of the bass caught were caught closer to mid-day near steep contours suspended shallow.  Most boats went up river to find higher temps and pre-spawning bass but the winning teams caught them on these steep drops throwing shad raps and swim baits near the main part of the lake.

Considering the poor fishing on Hardy, I am still pleased to get student anglers competing on the water. High schools are finally beginning to sanction bass fishing as an official sport all around the country. Although, I sacrificed fishing the season opener with Joe, Micah and our friend Joel on Houghton (see that report here – they did amazing) I did get to build a deeper relationship with 6 young men from Grand Rapids Christian High.
