Quick Tip to Keep Water Wolves From Stealing Your Lures

Every year I would donate 50+ jig heads to the local water wolf union on Houghton Lake. It got to the point last year that enough was enough. My son (who comes up with 90% fo the good ideas on the boat) decided to do something about the massive hemorrhaging of tackle. So he whipped out a spool of 30 lb fluorocarbon Gamma leader material and tied an FG knot (see awesome “how to” video by Salt Strong - love these guys!). And the results were unbelievable. We thought that most of our bite off were from little fish - but soon discovered that we were wrong.

Last year we caught so many more big northerns - because we actually got to land them. And we also avoided losing tons of gear which resulted in less time retying and more time fishing. Here’s the best part: I don’t think it affected our walleye catches at all. We still caught tons of eyes (and crappies, gills, smallies, largies…).

Here’s the quick deets:

  1. Buy 30lb Fluorocarbon leader material from Gamma.

  2. Tie 3’ leader with an FG Knot.

  3. Tie lure on.

  4. Catch more fish and loose less tackle!

I will have more to report after another spring of putting this into practice…hope this tip helps you turn more fish and loose less this upcoming season!
