Jerkbait keys

We have experienced a lot of success with various kinds of jerkbaits this spring. And there are a lot of new ways to dress up your cranks. Here are a couple we find particularly noteworthy:

  1. Switch out the rear treble with a feathered treble hook - you will see significant increase in bites. We started to tie our own and it’s relatively simple.

  2. Buy a hybrid bladed treble from VMC. There are days when this little tweak really does make the fish freak (VMC’s marketing slogan). We have experienced it - but there are days when it doesn’t draw as much attention as the feathered treble. It’s a game of trial and error.

  3. I like some baits more than others - but the reality is that it’s worth trying lots of options. Shallow, deep, bigger, smaller, bigger twitch, smaller slashes…again, try and try until you find what the fish want.

  4. It’s all in the pause (that’s a line from a Rapala commercial). And there’s a lot of truth to that. Our success yesterday had a lot to do with a longer pause - and the key to a longer pause is having some system to slow the speed of your drift down enough to where you can really control the bait and the pause.
