Post Spawn Smallmouth Success on Lake George
Many don’t like the post spawn period because of just how scattered the fish can be. However, from my perspective there are a lot of reasons to see this as one of the most fun seasons to catch not only numbers of fish, but also some of the biggest you’ll see all year. Here are my favorite ways to fish them during this season:
Top water. I don’t know why, but from my experience, the top water bite on Lake George is really good from about the first or second week of June right up through the first of July. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that after the spawn, a lot of fish suspend out of points and near shore humps. Favorite top water options include: walk the dog style baits, prop baits, Whopper Ploppers, and poppers (pretty much all top water options :).
Suspending Jerkbaits. It’s hard to beat the fun of seeing a fish blow up on a lure, but the jerkbait bite is a close second. The key here is to fish deep diving suspending baits out over structure. I have a couple of real secrets that I’ll share with you if you interact with me over a comment.
Hair. I like to drag or troll light hair jigs during this season as well. You can fish that 8-15 fow and find lots of solid males that are either guarding nests or just finished up their duty.
What makes the post spawn bite so fun is that you can find fish shallow and deep. I move a lot, cover water, fish fast. More content to come soon! We can’t wait to document all of this on our Freshwater Therapy YouTube channel. Subscribe now and check out a lot of good content with more on the way:
