The Best New Technique for Summer 2018
I've heard a lot about the hair jig, but up until this summer I had never fished one. I bought a handful of VMC's Dominator Marabou Jig and started fishing them about midsummer. Ever since I put one on, I've been pounding fish.
Most of the time I'm fishing deep water with them - anywhere between 25 and 40 fow. As I'm learning this new technique, this is how I'm fishing the jig: I cast it out, let it fall to the bottom, and then slowly twitch it back to the boat. The bite often feels like a bluegill ticked it. It's a very subtle bite - but the results have been impressive. I've caught big smallmouth and largemouth on this little offering.
I purchased a Diawa Tatula Elite 7'6" spinning rod which is actually designed for this technique - this rod is super sweet. Super sensitive and yet powerful to deal with big fish. If you get a chance to try this, you won't regret it. I know it's gonna work on walleyes back in Michigan as well. If you already fish the hair jig, let me know what you've found to be successful!
