Mayfly Madness
Just finished our spring run and had an incredible time. Learned a ton about how water temps affect the walleye bite. But probably one of my greatest take away from our spring was what we learned when the mayflies started to pop on Houghton Lake. And here was our big learning lesson…one key bait to have in your arsenal when the mayflies start to fly is the 1.5” Charlie Brewer Slider Grub - we like both the pumpkin black flake and a the watermelon chart tail.
But I think the key to it all is the size and slow tail wag. We thread them on a 3/32 oz tungsten Keitech jigheads and let it hit the bottom and slow snap/lift it all the way back to the boat. Micah likes to fish them on a 7’6” ultra light action Okuma Guide Select Pro.
Everything eats these things - but the walleyes especially gorge on them. Micah did really well pitching them into the cabbage, into the inside weed edge, and off the outside of the weed edge.
When it comes to fishing during the mayfly hatch, you have two options - either try and get them to react to something - or fish something that is a great imitator. We were super impressed with the Slider again this spring!
