Best Hair Jigging Rod: Douglas Outdoors xMatrix DXS-763ml

5.88 Smallie with a Douglas XMatrix DXS-763ml and a hair jig

This rod could possibly be the finest rod ever made. We use it for so many different techniques: casting plastics for walleye (incredible tool), great for throwing baits for lake trout (strong and sensitive to handle big head shakes)…but my favorite technique is using it to cast light hair jigs for big smallmouth.

The hair jig is quite possibly one of the greatest techniques I’ve learned in the last decade.

Top 3 reasons to buy a XMatrix DXS-763ml from Douglas Outdoors:

  1. Long rod helps with casting and feel. Often you need to make a 100 ft cast with a 1/8oz jig (especially if you’re fishing fussy fish or using Livescope). What we’re seeing is that fish will often stay 80-100 feet away from the boat making long casts imperative. This rod is key to making long casts.

  2. Super lightweight (weighing in at 4.0oz), well balanced rod is key to detecting any change (a slight push, lose of the feel of jig, bite detection comparable to a bluegill tap). I have written extensively about how to fish these baits in previous articles. I have fished lots of different hair jig rods. This one has risen to the top.

  3. Incredible price point for equipment of this caliber at $329 (not to mention great warranty and customer service).

I can’t tell you how many of my guide clients have bought these rods after using them on my boat. They’re just that good. If I had to pick one rod to buy, it would be this one. It’d be in your best interest to put one (or three of these in your boat asap). Hope you get a chance to experience what I get to fish with everyday!
